David Cameron
Managing Director
David is the founder and Managing Director of Connect Communications. He spent 22 years in newspapers before launching Connect. He started his career with Scottish and Universal, before moving to the Press and Journal in Aberdeen. In 1981 he joined the Scotsman as a Reporter, and was subsequently promoted to News Editor. He served as Assistant Editor of Scotland on Sunday, leaving Edinburgh in 1995 to join the Scottish Daily Express in Glasgow as its Head of News.

John Hatfield
Associate Editor
Began career as an Equity Analyst in the 1980s with stockbroker Charterhouse Tilney before joining the Investors Chronicle as European Editor. From there he was headhunted to join the Scotsman as Business Correspondent, later moving to Scotland on Sunday. Transferring to magazines he was appointed Editor of CA magazine, Scotland’s largest circulation business magazine and was then founding editor of Unlimited magazine for Carnyx Group. He then set up his own company, launching acclaimed titles such as Up Magazine and Scottish Finance, before selling the company in 2002.

Deputy Managing Director
Alan joined Connect in January 1999. He spent seven years with the UK travel Group, Carlson, where he served as Public Relations Manager for its major brand, A.T. Mays, and controlled the public relations campaign for the re-branding of A.T. Mays to Carlson Worldchoice. He was subsequently promoted to Head of Communications for Carlson Leisure Group, which included Caledonian Airways. Before joining A.T. Mays he worked in the press offices at Slater, Hogg and Howison and British Telecom.

Peter Nicholson
Editor, The Journal
Peter joined Connect in August 2003 as Deputy Editor of The Journal of the Law Society of Scotland, having already acquired 22 years’ experience of publishing legal textbooks, journals and law reports, in which field he made his name as Editor of the Scots Law Times. A qualified solicitor with a first class honours degree in law from Edinburgh University, he brings with him a strong reputation for producing high quality titles through skilled editorial work.

Brian is an experienced daily newspaper journalist and PR practitioner. He joined Connect in July 2000 after a career spanning 30 years promoting the interests of a list of distinguished clients including the University of Paisley, the Littlewoods Organisation and UiE (Scotland) Limited. Brian is an accomplished broadcaster and writer.

Designer

Mark joined Connect in 2006 following a six-year spell with Keydata, where he was a senior designer responsible for designing a range of financial products, press advertising and studio administration. Prior to this he was at First Press Publishing working on a range of titles. He started his design career with Scottish Autotrader.

Irene Boyd
Finance & Print/Production Controller
Irene has been involved in a combined role of financial control and print production management since 1990. She joined Connect in 2000 and is responsible for the day-to-day control of all financial aspects of the company as well as all print buying and production control. Her expertise and knowledge of print buying and production control techniques assures competitive pricing and an assurance of quality across the range of Connect client publications.

Tim Power
Editorial Executive
Tim joined Connect in 2003 after three years as Head of Employee Communications with National Australia Group, which includes the Clydesdale Bank. He was responsible for keeping 13,000 employees informed of strategic developments within the group using publications, video, intranet and staff conferences. He has held account management roles with Barkers Trident Communications, Prescom and Weber Shandwick producing employee and customer publications for a wide range of blue chip companies. Tim also has experience in journalism, market research and PR.

Debbie joined Connect's design team in 2005 from Music Scotland, where she was senior designer on titles such as M8, a monthly dance and culture magazine. During her 12 years there she worked on other leading titles including Schuh magazine, Wax and Go!

A graduate, Scott joined Connect in 2003 from the magazine division of Newsquest in Glasgow, where he worked on a number of the publications in their portfolio. He has newspaper design experience from his spells at the Daily Mail and Daily Express. In addition, he has experience of multi media and animation.

Heather Laing
Designer

Heather joined Connect in May 2003 from Direct Holidays, where she was responsible for the design and production of holiday brochures and company marketing material. Prior to joining Direct she was Design and Production Manager for The Drum, the magazine for the media industry in Scotland. She had earlier spells at the Edinburgh Evening News and Peebles Publishing Group.

Niamh O’Shea
Account Manager

Niamh O'Shea joined Connect in 2007 as an account manager working across two monthly magazines, CA Magazine and the Journal of the Law Society of Scotland, developing the commercial interests of the titles.

Her career spans media sales, marketing and events management. She spent more than a year at the Edinburgh-based Talk 107 radio station as a business development executive. Before that she was a project manager for Scottish Rugby. Her career started with Emap Advertising in London before moving to Edinburgh with Scotsman Publications.

A versatile and experienced journalist, Jim has worked on a number of newspapers, magazines and websites during his 10-year career. Before joining Connect in 2006, Jim was a freelance feature writer and sub-editor for a variety of titles including The Herald, Metro, the Scottish Mail on Sunday, the Daily Record and the Scottish Daily Express. Prior to that, he spent five years working in London as Deputy Editor of a music magazine and Editor of a music website.

With a BA(Hons) from Glasgow School of Art, Renny has been behind some of Scotland’s most influential business publications. Unlimited, Business Headline, Out-Law, Prospect and Up magazines, are just a few of the titles to have benefited from Renny’s innovative design ideas.

Renny also launched in-house and contract publications for several blue-chip companies including: The Royal Bank of Scotland, Scottish Enterprise, Littlewoods Pools, The Daily Express, Evening Times, The Herald, Glasgow University and Strathclyde University. Renny comes to Connect with experience in a number of senior production roles. And brings a unique perspective to Connect’s existing cutting edge design.

Alan Morton joined the design and production team at Connect in June 2004 from Music Scotland, where he spent five years as a designer working on two leading Scottish magazines, M8 and Schuh. He's worked in London as a freelance designer, and spent time with Express Newspapers and leading publisher, Northern and Shell plc. Alan also has a strong reprographics background.

Before joining Connect Nigel Donaldson spent more than 30 years in newspapers. In 22 years with The Scotsman, he was Chief Sub-Editor, Night Editor and then latterly Assistant Editor before leaving in 2000 to help set up and launch Business a.m., where he was Managing Editor.

Andrew has worked as a journalist for more than 20 years, on newspapers and news agencies in the UK, the US and New Zealand. Before joining Connect in 2006, he had been a business reporter for the Edinburgh Evening News and The Scotsman, and was Deputy News Editor of Business a.m. He has also worked as a public relations and marketing consultant for a range of public and private sector organisations.

Wendy Fenemore
Managing Editor

Former daily newspaper journalist Wendy joined Connect Communications in September 2005. An award-winning writer and experienced production journalist, she has worked for a variety of titles, including the Daily Record, The Herald and Sunday Herald, during a career spanning more than 20 years.

With her strong background in newspaper production, Wendy is ideally qualified to oversee the sub-editing of a number of our publications, in addition to managing several high-profile clients.

Carolann McGarrity
Print/Production Controller

Carolann is Connect’s newest recruit! She’s an experienced administrator who has worked within a variety of industries. She has a background in marketing and also ran her own administrative business. Carolann is the glue that holds all of the admin functions of the office together and is the first point of contact when you phone our main number. She also also plays a key role in commissioning photography for our portfolio of titles. She’s also PA to David Cameron.

Emma joined Connect in February 2005 from Strathclyde Police, where she managed and wrote the force's monthly staff newspaper, the multi award-winning Upbeat. With a BA Hons in English Studies she qualified as journalist with her National Council for Training of Journalists (NCTJ) certificate from Edinburgh's Napier University. She has worked as a features writer, journalist, information assistant, press officer and publications officer with a variety of private and public sector organisations.

Gary Atkinson

An experienced writer, sub-editor and editor, Gary joined Connect in 2006 from the Institute of Chartered Accounts (ICAS) where he was the account handler for a range of titles. Before joining ICAS, he edited the public sector business magazine Government Opportunities, where he won the Business Services Association’s 2005 Journalist of the Year award. During almost a decade in journalism, his other roles have included writing for the Sunday Herald, and copywriting for, editing, and advising on a number of companies’ corporate communications.

Robert Outram
Editor, CA Magazine

Robert joined Connect in September 2006, having been editor of CA Magazine since 1998 with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS). As editor, he has overseen the evolution of CA Magazine and also helped to set up ICAS’ customer publishing business, also now part of Connect.

He was previously a freelance journalist and editorial consultant based in London, writing for a range of publications and editing a number of titles including Communicating Solutions (for Cable & Wireless Communications), and Internal Auditing, the journal of the Institute of Internal Auditors.

He is a former editor of Accountancy Age, the news weekly for the accountancy profession and, before that, worked for the Age’s publishers, VNU, in a number of roles, including editing Management Consultancy magazine.

Before embarking on a career in journalism, he worked in local government and as a trainee chartered accountant.

John Pender
Designer

John moved to Connect in September 2006 with the CA Magazine publishing account. An experienced publications designer, he has worked for the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, where he designed its magazine SEPAview. He also designed material for Scottish National Heritage. He then went to work for Forth Independent Newspapers on titles such as The Wee County News of Alloa and the Scots Independent. He joined the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS) in 2005 to work on CA Magazine and a range of other titles for clients including the General Teaching Council for Scotland, Edinburgh University, Lloyds TSB, the Faculty of Advocates and the Institute of Chartered Foresters.

Daniel Lambie
Senior Communications Consultant

Daniel joined Connect in 2007 from Standard Life plc, where he was a group internal communications consultant. During his time there he set up and managed a suite of communication channels, including the award winning staff magazine.

As well as his experience in corporate communications, Daniel previously founded and managed an independent publishing company, which launched a lifestyle magazine in Edinburgh and managed a small portfolio of contract publishing projects.

Before this, he spent three years as associate editor of a regional magazine and published a book of local history to coincide with the millennium.

Jane Deane
Commercial Director

Jane has worked for 17 years in the magazine and newspaper industry on the commercial side. She was the launch Sales Manager of the Sunday Herald and then, following the successful launch, took on a group sales manager role across The Herald, Evening Times and Sunday Herald with responsibility for commercial development and retail. Prior to this Jane, worked in London for nine years for large publishers including VNU, Emap and IPC. The majority of her time in the south was spent at the National Magazine Company in a number of different roles from Sales Manager at Country Living to Corporate Sales Manager across the whole group of magazines and finally Group Head of New Business. Since leaving what was then SMG’s publishing division in 2001, Jane has spent the last four years managing the Scotland and North East sales territory for NatMags once again selling across the whole group of titles. She brings to Connect a wealth of advertising and sales management experience

Jenn joined CA Magazine in October 1996 after spending a number of years with the Scotsman and providing freelance sales support for Scottish Business Insider. She’s responsible for display advertising and sponsorship sales, servicing key accounts across a range of sectors such as banking and law. She also handles sponsorship for a range of ICAS events.

James Cargill
Senior Designer

A creative all-rounder, James joined Connect in 2007 after eight years working for many of Scotland’s leading magazines and newspapers, something we look for in all our design team. His first job in design was with The List, the well-known “what’s on” magazine. This led him to additional work on programmes and brochures for Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations. He then moved to the Carnyx Group and worked on trade titles such as Marketeer and Prospect. The Daily Record came calling, and he joined them as an editorial designer working on news, features and sport. He then took a year out to travel the globe before landing back in Scotland and a job in a design and marketing agency before joining Connect.

Paul joined Connect full time in May 2007 after a spell working for us part time during the latter stages of his studies. He has a BA in applied graphics technology with multimedia studies from Glasgow Caledonian University and is equally at home with Dreamweaver as he is with Quark.

Richard started off his career in print as a reporter and editor, before turning to television as a news writer and producer.

He worked in various places around the world, from NHK in Japan to CNBC Asia in Hong Kong and CNN in both Hong Kong and London. Richard worked on setting up and training journalists for new networks in India, Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

He joined Connect in February 2008 to manage and edit the online version of CA Magazine and has a key editorial role in the development of the company’s online publishing business.
