‘A great place to learn’

Grace Balfour-Harle, third year student at the University of Aberdeen, spends a week with Connect as part of her placement with the General Teaching Council for Scotland. Here, she describes the experience…

I was lucky enough to spend five days at Connect as part of a work placement with one of its clients, the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS).

I had been working on a resource booklet about Professional Update for teachers, and was given the opportunity to try my hand at designing a front cover for it. I also collated the articles together and edited and ordered them. I didn’t really have any design experience before this, and so it was a really interesting and challenging project for me in many ways.

Everyone at Connect was really friendly and welcoming, and I was made to feel like part of the team straight away. I was put to work looking out the relevant archived articles. Once that was done, organising the articles was needed, and then it was a simple case of updating the page numbers (and feeling like I was losing the ability to count along the way). Creating a front cover and introductory page was a completely new experience, but I found my feet quite quickly. I then came back into the office after having this first draft proofed, to update the order and create a contents page for the booklet.

Connect was a great place to have a work placement, even for a short period of time. I learned a lot about graphic design, which is another part of publishing that I wouldn’t have found out about otherwise. I have gained a lot of knowledge about publishing, and possible career prospects that I didn’t know about. I had a lovely time at Connect, and am very grateful that the team let me come and work with them for a few days.
