Reaching new heights

Mark Duncan is the latest ‘towering’ talent to join the Connect team. At 6ft 6 inches, the former Commonwealth Games basketball player is already making a ‘slam dunk’ with his graphic design skills and creativity in a number of magazines in Connect’s stable.

After graduating with a degree in graphic design from Falkirk College in 2000, Mark cut his teeth in the newspaper world working in the marketing and promotions team at the Scotsman. After eight years, he went on to join the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) in Stirling, designing its flagship magazine, SEPA View, along with other marketing collateral and reports.

He joined Connect as a senior designer in June, tempted by our reputation for creative design and the opportunity to work on a wide range of different products, from traditional magazines to online media.

Commenting on his first month at the company, Mark said: “I’ve been very impressed with Connect. It has a well-organised studio with great products. I’m enjoying the creativity here and the attention to detail – I’m loving it.”

Although Mark no longer plays basketball, he’s still passionate about keeping fit, as you’ll find him down the gym every lunchtime.

Looking back at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Australia, he said: “To play for the Scottish senior basketball team at the Games has been one of the most extraordinary experiences of my life – even though we got thrashed by Australia by the biggest margin in the Games history… and on TV!

“But although we were amateurs, we were given the same respect at the games by all the athletes. I even got to party with Linford Christie at a nightclub and helped Chris Hoy iron his shirt for the opening ceremony – he had no idea!”
