Connect With Us: Roisin McGroarty

Lucky number seven!

For our seventh ‘Connect With Us’, we are excited to introduce you to our lovely Account Manager Roisin McGroarty.

Roisin joins us this week to talk about her editorial career so far, from starting in newspapers to working in journalism and communications.

What does she think of her colleagues at Connect and what advice does she have for anyone else starting out in their own careers? Keep reading to find out!

Tell us a bit about your career
I started with the traditional newspaper route. I worked my way up from Junior to Senior Reporter, followed by a stint as a News Editor and then Managing Editor to two newspaper titles and four magazines. While a senior reporter I was the primary court reporter, which was a truly eye-opening experience.

I’ve been at Connect since 2015 and have managed countless magazine publications, supported national and international clients with their communications and run a number of video and animation projects. It’s never boring!

What does your day-to-day look like?
My days always start the same, checking for any overnight updates from our ongoing projects and running over my immediate to-do list. From there my day can vary greatly, depending on what client campaigns are ongoing and publications are in the studio. I may have to storyboard a video ahead of a filming schedule, or manage content for a magazine.

Sometimes there are multiple projects happening at the same time, so it’s important to multi-task and give each project attention.

Being organised with the foundations of projects allows me to embrace my creative side and see the bigger picture to support my clients.

Why do you love your job?
I love the buzz of the projects and making great communication campaigns that support people. When a client needs printed material, I liaise with our Print and Supply Chain Controller Claire Nichol and our in-house designers to meet all requirements. When a job is digital only, such as a website rebranding, I work closely with our Front-End Developer Paul McGinnity. Really, everything we do is a team effort!

Every day I get to work with our truly talented people in the studio –  it’s a great team we have here at Connect!

What advice would you give to someone else wanting to follow this career path?
Don’t feel you have to have all the answers immediately. I started out in newspaper journalism and have evolved into running large-scale communications projects. The most important thing is to get your grounding and experience, and from there you can move forward and be involved in some amazing projects.

Best piece of advice you’ve been given?
“Create back-ups and save your work!” Honestly, it is repeatedly said in the ‘Connect with us’ articles, and for good reason! We have all lost a piece of work and that sinking realisation is something you never want to repeat. Also, never write anything down that you wouldn’t want published!

‘Connect With Us’ is a series where we invite you all to get to know the faces behind Connect a little better. So far, we’ve introduced you to Liam Shaw, Ann Craib, Craig Gibson, Claire Nichol, Ryan Swinney, David Hughes, Fiona Ramsay and Euan Campbell. Haven’t caught up with them yet?
