An Honour for Peter Nicholson

Peter Nicholson has been granted honorary membership to the Law Society of Scotland.

Editor of the Law Society of Scotland’s Journal magazine since 2003, Peter has been recognised by the Society for his long-standing contribution and commitment to the legal profession – with more than 40 years’ experience in legal publishing.

As Editor, Peter has communicated the important messages of the Society with its members via the monthly Journal magazine, keeping the legal sector abreast of all vital topics of interest with regular news, updates and forums. Peter also saw the Journal move into the digital age, bringing the magazine online and to social media and in doing so, reaching an even bigger audience of legal professionals.

Peter’s commitment to exemplary content for the Journal has seen him recognised before – having won three times the Professional Publishers Association (PPA) Business and Professional Editor of the Year at the Scottish Magazine Awards in 2010, 2012 and 2015.

Now being awarded this honorary membership, Peter becomes only the 21st person to receive such an accolade since 1949, when the Law Society of Scotland was first founded. His special lifetime membership will be acknowledged and celebrated at the Law Society’s Annual General Meeting on 29 June 2023.

Sheila Webster, President of the Law Society of Scotland, said: “Honorary membership of the Law Society is the highest accolade we can bestow and I am delighted to award it to Peter for his passion and dedication to the profession.”

Peter was blown away when he received the news.

He said: “This came right out of the blue and I am a little in awe at finding myself in the company of such a distinguished list of past recipients. It is a huge honour and I am, in equal measure, extremely grateful to the Law Society of Scotland and deeply touched at being thought worthy of it.”

“I know I have followed an unusual career path, but it is one in which I have always tried to be of service to the legal profession, not only to readers but to those looking to share their experience and their views with others.”

“I have always admired those who manage to find time to write on top of a busy professional life and I am grateful to every contributor from over the years. For me, it is a mark of the collegiate nature of the Scottish profession that so many have been willing to do so.

“It has been a privilege to edit the Society’s Journal for close on 20 years now and other respected titles for an equal period before that, and if people appreciate the results of my labours, I am content. Thank you.”

Connect Chairman and owner David Cameron said: “In what has undoubtedly been an incredibly successful and impactful career, we send our heartfelt congratulations to Peter, and I and the team are honoured to have worked alongside him these past 20 years. Thank you Peter.”
